When someone says dining at a fancy restaurant is like a MAMAK stall, with aircon, they couldn't be more wrong. Plus you should stop taking advice from that friend who told you that. Anyway, dining at a classy place requires a bit more effort on classiness from your part. You Get what you pay for, and what you get is a good place with great service, great food, and great dinner etiquette from other guests. Now, this may be scary for some of you LOYAL HAWKER STALL GOERS, but baby steps. Read through this, and perhaps can turn you from a pauper to a prince...
5 Don'ts of Dinner Etiquette!
- Don't talk with your mouth full! It is NOT a good thing to let your date see what food looks like in your mouth.
- Don't cut huge slices of food, and then stuff them all in your mouth. I know you can, but Don't!
- For goodness sake, WASH your hands when you pay visit to the little boy's room, and save the whole world a little less food poisoning.
- Don't use a toothpick or apply makeup at the table. Also, don't talk on the phone when you're at the table. It's the sound only goes one way...At least the radio was entertaining.
- Don't blow on your food, no matter how hot is it. Just leave it for a while, or stir it a little.
Other stuff you should know
Always say please when asking for something. Be sure to say thank you to your server and bus boy after they have removed any used items. Pass food from the left to the right. If asked for the salt or pepper, pass both together, even if a table mate asks for only one of them. This is so dinner guests won't have to search for orphaned shakers. Food is served from the left. Dishes are removed from the right. Always scoop food before seasoning it. Do try a little of everything on your plate. Keep elbows off the table. Keep your left hand in your lap unless you are using it. To signal that your are done with the course, rest your fork, tines up, and knife blade in, with the handles resting at five o'clock an tips pointing to ten o'clock on your plate.
